Santa Monica Dolphins at PRFC Men’s A-side
Pasadena and Santa Monica faced off this weekend after being rained out two weeks ago. It almost seemed like ground hog day since Santa Monica could not procure a field which would have meant another rescheduling. All was not lost, Pasadena was gracious enough to host for this rain make up.
The match started off with ideal weather conditions as Pasadena kicked off. A few minutes into the match Santa Monica capitalized with a few quick passes out to their wing, which used every inch of the side line to score a 35 meter try. Santa Monica grabs a quick 5-0 lead. A few minutes later Santa Monica and Pasadena have their first scrum 40 meters in Pasadena’s territory. Santa Monica puts in and wins the scrum. With a few quick passes out to their outside center Santa Monica takes the ball in for a score with the conversion good Santa Monica leads 12-0. Pasadena regains their composure and has a line out in Santa Monica’s territory 10 meters from their try line. Pasadena wins the line out and mauls the ball in for a score put down by Hugo Sanchez. Hugo kicks for his own conversion and misses, 12-5 Santa Monica. Santa Monica scores the next 33 unanswered points, while Pasadena plays a man down after Api Foumai receives a red card for an illegal tackle 15 mins into the first half. Pasadena never gives up and only allows Santa Monica to score once in the second half. Pasadena never quit and with 12 mins left Peter Koch scores a try from a line out. The game ultimately ends 45-10 with Santa Monica being victorious. Man of the Match for the Pasadena backs was Gabriel Martin Del Campo and Paul “Frenchie” Mazur for the forwards. The men’s next game will be at Encanto Park against Tempe on 2/18/17.
PRFC Royals (Women’s side) at Las Vegas Slots
The Royals traveled to Las Vegas for their first away match of the season this past weekend. The Royals received the kickoff to start the match. Despite dominating possession in Vegas territory for most of the first half, the Royals were down 7-0 at the half. The second half was again dominated by the Royals. The forwards gained ground steadily and were able to send the ball out to the backs to score twice giving the Royals a lead of 10-7. After a tough battle, the Slots scored a try in the last seconds of the game, bringing the final score to 12-10. Flanker, Carolann “Token” Icasiano earned Forward of the Match after nailing tackle after tackle against the forward-heavy Slots. Angelica “Heli” Ramos earned Back of the Match after breaking the line at inside center and getting assists to Tiffany “Tots” Tate and Kristine Nakada, who both scored tries for the Royals. This weekend the Royals will travel to Tucson to play the Old Pueblo Lightning.

PRFC Men’s A-side at OMBAC
Pasadena played their second game of the season against Old Mission Bay Athletic Club (OMBAC) on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in San Diego, CA. Pasadena struck first blood with a line out walk in try. The conversion was no good and Pasadena led 5-0 22 minutes into the first half. Pasadena’s inside center, Jeremiah Flood, after some great teamwork between the forwards and backs. The conversion was made by Russell Pitts, bringing the score to 12-0. For the third try of the day, Hollan Fiu scored under the posts after multiple phases of play from a restart. The conversion was made by Russell Pitts to lengthen the lead to 19-0. Pasadena received a yellow card for a high tackle late in the first half and starts the second half a player down.
Shortly after the start of the second half, OMBAC scored and converted the try for a score of 19-7. OMBAC received a yellow card and with Pasadena back at full capacity, was down a player. Pasadena stole a line out and after several phases with the forwards, Phill Happe Hartsell scored. Pitts’ conversion brought the score to 26-7. OMBAC, back at full capacity, replied with a try but missed the conversion. Thirty minutes into the second half Pitts converted on a penalty for a score of 33-12 and OMBAC received their 2nd yellow card of the match. OMBAC, down a man, replied with a try and a successful conversion. The match was a victorious one for Pasadena Rugby Football Club winning 33-19. The men of Pasadena have a record of 2-0 for the season and play their next game February 4th, 2017 versus Santa Monica Rugby Club.
Santa Barbara Mermaids at PRFC Royals (Women’s side)
The Royals defeated the Santa Barbara Mermaids 58-8. The first match of the season was seized as an opportunity to work out some kinks and get rookies some game time. Erika “Russia” Matczenko was among those that scored for the Royals, earning her rookie try and Forward of the Match. The Back of the Match was awarded to Ashley Gallegos who started in the scrum-half position for the Royals. This game proved to be a great start to the 2017 season against one our favorite opponents.
